HOW TO BUILD RESILIENCE

8-Session Workshop

MONDAY AFTERNOONS 4:30 - 5:40 p.m.

October 28 - December 16, 2019

Max Class Size 6 Students - Ages 10 and up

Building resilience means helping kids develop the skills to handle the ups and downs of growing up without getting down on themselves or giving up on themselves.  Developing resilience is one of the most important mindset skills for kids to learn because their ability to pick themselves up again when things don't go their way will directly shape who they become and what they create in their lives.

The good news is that resilience can be taught.  We call this lesson Slaying Dragons! To learn how to slay dragons, kids learn specific skills for managing mistakes, overcoming fear, moving past disappointment and failure, and handling change.  The key to handling these challenges is learning to use power shifting skills (reframing), developing supportive belief systems, using positive self-talk, and practicing visualization.

In these 8 sessions, kids learn how to get back up again after falling down so that disappointments and failures don't keep them from their dreams.

October 28, 2019 - How Your Mind Shapes Your World and What You Can Do to Shape Your Mind

Just like a plane can take us where we want to go on vacation, our mind takes us where we want to go in life.  Kids learn that our mind has two parts our conscious mind which acts like our pilot - controlling our "plane" with thoughts and our subconscious mind which acts like our autopilot - controlling our "plane" based on the "programs it is running.  These programs are called belief systems and either support us in creating what we want in life or they limit us at every turn.  Kids learn how to become empowered when they uncover negative beliefs and shift them to supportive beliefs. I share the story Who's Flying Your Plane and help kids understand how their mind shapes their world.  We also have a fun activity to reinforce the learning.

November 4, 2019 - The Power of Possibility

Belief systems shape what kids see as possible for their lives.  Kids who don't believe in themselves or who don't think their dreams are possible will in live in excuses and develop an "I can't attitude". Kids learn that when they build a belief system based on possibilities, they can overcome any obstacle, move through fear, handle mistakes, and failure, learn to successfully manage change, and bust outside their comfort zone, create courage, and go for it in life - even when there is no evidence that they will be successful.  I share the Power of Possibility story and help kids learn they achieve what they believe.

November 11, 2019 - Overcoming Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes, it's part of life.  In this session, kids learn that mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow.  They learn the "Five I's of Managing Mistakes" so they know how to learn from the mistake and let it go. We also have a fun activity to reinforce learning.

November 18, 2019 - Managing Fear

Kids will face many challenges in life but the strongest opponents they will face are the "dragons" that can flood their mind.  Thoughts of self-doubt, concerns about other people's opinions, and fear of the unknown can devastate self-esteem and self-confidence - freezing kids in their tracks and keeping them from their dreams.  Kids learn the "dragons" are just creations of their mind and that they can use the five steps for moving past fear to move through fear and go for it.

November 25, 2019 - Positive Self-Talk

Children's thoughts about themselves create the way they experience themselves and their world.  This session helps kids understand what they say to themselves is more important than what anyone else says to them.  They can use the power of positive self-talk to move through fear, to overcome mistakes, disappointments, and to manage change.  Kids learn that how they talk to themselves creates confidence and courage.

December 2, 2019 - Moving Past Failure

In this session, kids learn that failure is an event and not who they are.  They learn that failure is only a failure if they allow it to keep them from their goals and dreams.  Kids learn how to put failure in a "box" so they can learn from it and move forward in their power.  I share the story Afraid to Fail Fred and we also have a fun activity where kids get to make their own box for the "put it in a box" process as a reminder for how to move past disappointments.

December 9, 2019 - Visualization - How Winning in Your Mind Creates Winning in Life!

Visualization is a process of imagining yourself in the future having already achieved your goal.  Scientific research has proven that your mind cannot tell the difference between an experience you vividly imagine and an experience that is real.  When you use visualization to practice success in your mind, you develop strong neural pathways to prepare your mind to succeed.  Visualization is a powerful skill for helping kids manage change, move through fear, and pick themselves up after facing a disappointment or failure. I share the story I Hope Holly Helps Herself to help kids learn about the power of visualization.

December 16, 2019 - Managing Change

In this session, kids learn that change is a critical part of life.  They cannot create who they want to be by staying where they are.  Only by accepting and embracing change can they move forward in their power.  I share the story Changes in Paradise and kids learn the three steps for managing change and learn that handling change builds powerful self-confidence as they learn how to handle anything that comes their way!
